BRITTANY'S LESSON PAGE
LESSON 1
Hi B! Welcome to your lesson page. For lesson 1 we're going to go over some basic theory and rock some Tegan and Sara! The document to the right shows you the chromatic scale on the high E and B strings. This is just going up the neck fret by fret and note by note to get familiar with where the notes are. Then it moves on to show you the C major scale on the same strings. Practice the C major scale on each string while saying the names of the notes! Then try and find some melodies (Mary Had a Little Lamb, Twinkle Twinkle, etc.) in the C major scale.
The Tegan and Sara tune is pretty simple. A few Barr Chord shapes to get down, and the strumming pattern. I explain it pretty well in the video, but the main point here is to try and get that "perpetual motion" feeling in the strumming hand with down strokes on the down beats and up strokes on the off beats. Have fun and good luck! |

LESSON 2
Hey B! Today we're looking at the Kinks and a continuation of the scale theory we did last time. The guitar is an interesting instrument in that you can play horizontally (like the one string scales) or vertically. Here is the C major scale in the first position. It's a vertical scale, so once you get it down, you won't have to move around so much. Practice the scale up and down. The notes are written on the chart and the numbers just below the note names are the left hand fingerings. (1 is index, 2 is middle, etc.) Major scales have 7 notes. The 1st, 3rd, and 5th note are the notes we use to make the major chord. In this case those notes are C, E, G. If you play these notes linearly, it is called an arpeggio.
Nice choice of song! I'm a huge Kinks fan. This is one of my favorites. I go over it pretty well in the video, but I wanted to let you know that this one has a few tricky moves so take it slow and don't get frustrated! Take the chord changes one at a time and make sure you are fingering the chord shapes the right way. The strumming is pretty simple, so it's going to be mostly a left hand challenge!!! Good luck and have a ball, z |
