PRANAV'S LEsson Page
lesson 1
Hey Pranav! Welcome to your lesson page. Today we're talking about triads and chord scales. You have the shapes down pretty well on string set 1 (strings 1, 2, 3). Today we are moving on to string set 2 (strings 2, 3, 4). The concept is the same, but shapes are a little different. First get the three inversions of the C major triad down, and then work on your chord scales for each inversion. Remember to try and keep in mind which note of the chord is on bottom, and which is on top. *When we talk about "bottom" and "top" in regards to music, we are referring to the height of the pitch! So a higher sounding note will be "on top" of a lower sounding note. It's not necessarily how they will appear on the guitar in physical space. In all of these chords the note that is "on top" will be closest to your feet! (assuming you're holding the guitar the right way:) Have fun and I'll see you next week, Z

lesson 2
Hi Pranav! This week we're looking at the CAGED system of learning scales. The system is based on the major chord shapes C, A, G, E, and D in the first position on the guitar. Once you learn to move these shapes, their arpeggios, and major scales around the guitar, you can connect major scale positions easily and really get around the instrument. We'll focus on the C shape this week. The attached file has all of the shapes notated in the key of C major. Practice the arpeggio and scale slowly. Also, we started learning "Take a Look at that Baby." It's a great old fingerstyle tune by John Fahey. You should be able to get the first few phrases (that we worked on in class) from the video and the chart. Have fun and see you on Sunday! z

lesson 3
Hey Pranav! This lesson we're looking at "Take a Look at That Baby" by John Fahey. You were dong great with it last I saw you. Just check out the video and take it slow. Once you get to the end of this video you'll be more than half way there!!! Have fun and don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions. See you sunday!! Z

Lesson 4
Hey P! Here's a chart of the CAGED scale system we were looking at. Approach it shape by shape and take it slow. It's a great way of organizing the guitar! Also, I made you a video of the Hammer-on/Pull-off exercises we were talking about. Hopefully they will help you smooth out that tune your working on. Good luck and see you next week! Z

lesson 5
Hey P! This week we're working on the F chord section of "Take a Look at that Baby." I break it down for you in the video. Remember to take it slow!!! Also, reminder that part of your homework is to analyze the chord changes to the tune. Use the Roman Numerals. We talked about Dominant 7th chords in the lesson. A dominant 7th is a major chord with a flat 7th. A C dominant chord would be C, E, G, Bb. It would be notated like C7. Dominant chords are usually V chords. The V-I cadence is a huge part of western music! Like G7 resolving to C. When you're analyzing this tune, if you notice any chords that are out of the key, consider that they might be dominant chords! Look at them as V chords and see if the following chord is the I chord. Good luck! See you next week. z

lesson 6
Hey Pranav! This week we're talking about Barre chords. I go through them pretty thoroughly in the video. There are two main groupings: Barr chords with the bass note on the 6th string, and barre chords with the bass note on the 5th string. Also in the video, I play through the second half of "Take a Look at That Baby." See if you can get some of the barre chord shapes under your fingers and finish the tune. Let me know if you have any questions! Good luck with your SAT's and I'll see you in a couple weeks, Z
